Spring-Cleaning Tips for Your Piano

By The Piano Doctor

Spring is the perfect time to give your piano a little love. After a long winter, your instrument might be feeling the effects of dry air, dust, or neglect. As The Piano Doctor, I’ve tuned hundreds of pianos across the U.S., and I’m sharing five easy spring-cleaning tips to keep your piano sounding beautiful. Follow these steps, and your piano will be ready for spring recitals or family jam sessions!

1. Dust the Keys with Care

Your piano’s keys collect dust, oils, and grime from fingers. Use a soft, lint-free cloth (like microfiber) to gently wipe each key from back to front. Avoid sprays or water, which can seep into cracks and damage the wood or ivory. For stubborn spots, a cloth lightly dampened with a 1:10 vinegar-water mix works wonders. Dry immediately to keep your keys gleaming.

2. Keep It Out of Direct Sunlight

Spring sunlight can brighten your home but harm your piano. UV rays and heat can warp wood and fade finishes. Position your piano away from windows or use curtains to block direct sun. This protects the soundboard and keeps tuning stable as temperatures rise.

3. Check for Sticky Keys

Ever notice a key that feels sluggish? Winter’s dry air can cause felts to compress or parts to misalign. Play each key slowly to spot any that stick or feel off. Don’t force them—sticky keys often need a professional touch to avoid damage. A spring tuning can fix this and refresh your piano’s action.

4. Schedule a Tuning Post-Winter

Winter’s low humidity can pull your piano out of tune, making it sound flat or sharp. Spring’s milder weather is ideal for a tuning, as humidity stabilizes. A professional tuning (like mine!) ensures every note sings and prevents long-term wear. Don’t wait—pianos thrive with regular care.

5. Clear the Clutter

Your piano isn’t a shelf! Books, plants, or decorations on top can muffle sound and stress the frame. Clear everything off this spring to let your piano’s tone shine. A clean, open piano also looks inviting for players of all ages.
