“How to Keep Your Piano Safe in Summer Heat”
By The Piano Doctor
Summer brings warm days and high humidity, but these can be tough on your piano. Heat and moisture can warp wood, loosen tuning pins, and dull your instrument’s sound. As The Piano Doctor, I’ve tuned pianos from Augusta to Chicago, and I’m sharing five simple tips to protect your piano this summer. Follow these, and your piano will stay in top shape for impromptu concerts or quiet practice sessions!
1. Use a Dehumidifier
Summer humidity can swell your piano’s soundboard and keys, throwing it out of tune. Place a portable dehumidifier in the room (aim for 40–50% humidity) to keep moisture in check. Check it weekly to empty the tank and maintain consistent conditions for your piano.
2. Maintain Consistent Air Conditioning
Sudden temperature swings are a piano’s enemy. Keep your AC steady (around 70–75°F) to avoid heat stress on the wood and strings. If you’re away, set the thermostat to prevent the room from overheating—your piano will thank you.
3. Avoid Open Windows
Open windows let in humid air, which can rust strings and stick keys. Keep windows closed, especially during humid spells or rain. If you need ventilation, use fans or AC to circulate air without exposing your piano to moisture.
4. Check Tuning Stability
Summer heat can stretch strings, making your piano sound off. Play a few chords to check for sour notes. If it’s been over six months since your last tuning, summer’s a great time to refresh it. A professional tuning ensures your piano sounds crisp through the season.
5. Cover the Keys When Not in Use
Dust and sunlight can settle on keys during summer vacations. Use a dust cover or close the key lid when the piano’s idle. This protects the keys from UV damage and keeps them clean for your next session.
