Winter heat can drop indoor humidity to 20 % or lower — that’s desert-level dry. A piano likes 42–50 %. Quick fixes:

Place a room humidifier 6–8 ft away

Keep a $10 digital hygrometer on the music rack so you know exactly where you stand.

•  Keep It Out of the Hot Zone

Never let a vent, radiator, or fireplace blow directly on the piano — even for 30 minutes. A single blast of hot air can crack the soundboard. Rule of thumb: 3–4 ft buffer from any heat source.

• Play It Like You Mean It:

The best humidity control in the world is someone playing the piano every day. Those Christmas carols? They’re free maintenance. The more the strings and pins move, the longer it holds tune.
