Winter Piano Care: Shielding Your Instrument from Dry Heat, Holiday Wear, and Cold Snaps

-by The Piano Doctor

The holidays are behind us, but winter's grip is just tightening—dry furnace air, doors slamming from guests, and maybe a few too many renditions of seasonal favorites on the keys. Hey, it's Tim Arbisi, The Piano Doctor, here with fresh tips to keep your piano thriving through the coldest months.

1. Fight the Dry-Air Drought Indoor heating sucks moisture out fast, causing soundboard cracks, loose tuning pins, and flat pitch across the board.

  • Aim for 42-50% indoor humidity—grab a whole-room humidifier if needed.

  • Monitor with a simple digital hygrometer placed near (not on) the piano.

2. Handle Holiday Aftermath Gently Extra playing + spills from gatherings = sticky keys and hidden crumbs.

  • Wipe keys weekly with a slightly damp microfiber cloth (NO water on ivory or plastic use Key-Bright solution by The Cory Company).

  • Close the fallboard when not in use to block dust and pet hair.

  • If a drink spilled near the piano, contact me immediately to inspect ASAP—liquid damage spreads silently.

3. Watch for Winter Pitch Drop Cold, dry conditions pull strings flat faster than usual. If chords sound sour or the piano feels "dull," it’s begging for a tuning.

  • Schedule that post-holiday service now—most pianos need it twice yearly anyway.

  • Early sign: Bass notes detune first in low humidity.

4. Pedal & Action Check Dry wood can make pedals squeak or the action feel sluggish.

  • Light pedal use daily keeps mechanisms moving.

  • Next visit, ask about voicing touch-up if tone feels too bright/harsh from dry hammers.

5. Placement Reminder Keep it away from heat vents, fireplaces, and drafty windows—sudden temp spikes cause cracks and tuning instability.

Your piano carried the soundtrack for celebrations this year. Return the favor with a little winter TLC—it’ll reward you with richer tone and longer life.

  • Pro Tip:

Pianos have to have their hammers worked on often to ensure optimum sound quality.  Check out this video made for a church piano a few months ago.  The same procedure can be done to your piano. Watch Now
